Hive Five: Great Side Projects Happening Now

When full-time duties in one band isn’t enough for one’s creativity, there’s the option to moonlight in another. Here’s five current side projects that we think could be upgraded to full-time in the future.

1. Thao & Mirah

Both Thao with the Get Down Staydown and Mirah have flirted with success, largely spending the last five years slugging it out on the road in an ever-expanding indie-folkstress scene. But they’ve seem to have struck a chord with their collaborative effort, Thao & Mirah. Check out “Eleven,” a charming afro-funk song that couldn’t be further from just a girl and her guitar.

2. Blood Orange

Lightspeed Champion’s Dev Hynes founded Blood Orange, and with this new song, “Dinner” (released as a 7″), he takes on Prince’s paisley-tinged soul and brings along Grizzly Bear‘s Chris Taylor for production duties. A full-length hasn’t been officially announced but here’s hoping.

3. Xray Eyeballs

Golden Triangle’s O.J. San Felipe branched out into surf rock with Xray Eyeballs, filtered through some acid haze. Check out the video for “Crystal,” the lead song off their debut album Not Nothing.

4. Cat’s Eyes

Cat’s Eyes is the product of the Horrors‘ lead singer Faris Badwan and opera singer Rachel Zeffire. While the Horrors have the whole fuzz-rock market cornered, Cat’s Eyes might suggest a drift towards ’60s psych-pop.

5. Gayngs

Gayngs boasts members from Bon Iver (Justin Vernon), Megafaun, All Tiny Creatures, the Rosebuds, Solid Gold and Doomtree. The band’s last album, Relayted, utilized Vernon’s falsetto in their experimental folk ‘n’ pop sound, doused with doses of R&B. Check out “No Sweat,” which features a rare croon from rapper P.O.S.
