Cross Over Dreams! Drake Meets SBTRKT

This is the way it’s supposed to work. One of the biggest rappers in the world, his musical inquisitiveness piqued, gets on a massive single by a new underground producer and creates a crossover sensation that storms both their worlds. And changes how the world sounds.

Early Friday morning (May 20), October’s Very Own , the blog overseen by Drake (or at least the folks in his camp), posted a Mediafire file of a track: “SBTRKT feat. Yukimi (Little Dragon) – Wildfire RMX (feat. Drake).” The 4:20-long track opens with a freestyle that explores just what “the best sh*t of the year” might be, hinting that to Drake’s ears, it’s a snakey, dub groove by an up’n’coming British producer coming out of the UK bass scene.

This latest salvo in the two-decades-long conversation between American and British urban scenes is further proof that exploring the rhythmic push-and-pull between styles is exactly where good art and good pop find friction and form. It’s where they find the chance to make something greater than the sum of their individual parts. Go download it before it disappears.
