The latest song from Lil Wayne’s forthcoming The Carter IV leaked earlier this week, an update to Eminem’s classic stalker rap, “Stan.” Entitled “Dear Anne (Stan pt. 2),” Weezy smoothly lays out a ballad style response to his no. 1 fan. That got us thinking about stalkers and the songs that fit. Here’s five of ‘em.

1. Blondie, “One Way or Another” (1979)

Inspired by one of Debbie Harry’s exes, the stalking technique is rather classic: Drive by the house, and if the lights are out, proceed to the search at the haunt. [Watch here.]

2. The Police, “Every Breath You Take” (1983)

Sting says these haunting lines came to him in his sleep, and paints the stalker as a constant voyeur; it’s of the creepiest sentiments to line a worldwide hit. [Watch here.]

3. Geto Boys, “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” (1991)

Whether you’re up to no good or completely delusional, this Geto Boys classic rap captures all the paranoia that comes with just the idea that someone could be following you. [Watch here.]

4. Sarah McLachlan, “Possession” (1993)

Artists receive questionable letters of devotion all the time, but McLachlan used hers as inspiration for this tune. The song resulted in a lawsuit from a fan about the nature of using his “content.” The trial never came to be, as he sadly committed suicide just before it was due to be decided in court. 5. Death Cab for Cutie, “I Will Possess Your Heart” (2008)

At first listen, this songs appears to be another DCFC love ballad but frontman Ben Gibbard tells the tale of a guy who just can’t take a hint. Better spend some time, love … running. [Watch here.]
