Caetano Veloso‘s “O Leãozinho” (“Little Lion” in Portuguese) is quietly elegant in its original form, but in Beirut‘s hands — a cover for Red Hot Organization’s just-released Red Hot + Rio 2, the sequel to RHO’s best-selling 1996 benefit compilation — the song gains a little swagger and sway. Frontman Zach Condon, a self-professed lover of Brazilian music, buries some trepidation (he refuses to perform the tune ’til he gets the language right) for an oscillating performance seen above, filmed in a New York loft last March. But don’t worry, he saves the awkwardness for the interview.
Red Hot + Rio 2 is out now on Entertainment One Music, and also features contributions from Beck, of Montreal, David Byrne, and José González, among others.
