It’s not a surprise that Sufjan Stevens created artwork for and directed his own charmingly amateur clip for “Get Real Get Right.” He’s a man of many talents: singer/songwriter/every-single-instrumentalist, plus ”short story writer,” “graphic designer” and “freelance knitter for Martha Stewart Living.”

Like the album from which it comes (The Age Of Adz), the artwork for “Get Real Get Right” was inspired by outsider artist Royal Roberts, and there’s a childlike streak running throughout the video’s animation. Flying saucers and planets circulate superheroes and grotesque creatures, while glitter, confetti, white glue gobs and colored sand fill the space around these characters and objects, as if Stevens raided a kindergarten craft closet for his set pieces. The stop-motion animation is also apropos of the song; the sputter-and-stop beat and chaotic background vocals stutter along nicely with the video’s jumpy cartoon stars.  [Watch via Pitchfork.]
