Mountains, “Thousand Square”

Mountains. In a word? Serene. When Brooklyn duo Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp began the project in 2005, they had intended it to be a solely live affair, melding feathery acoustic instrumentation with experimental electronic processing, making what could easily be described as “soundscapes,” but we’ll favor the term “crazy aural quilt” instead. With “Thousand Square,” it’s a quilt swaddled gingerly about the head of their listeners — repetitive synths initially grab your ear, but through the course of nearly five minutes, the momentum shifts subtly with twinkling organic samples. Their previous, loosely melodic work pushes even closer towards placid ambiance. Indeed, a cozy spot to be.

Mountains’ latest album, Air Museum, is out now on Thrill Jockey.
