This week St. Vincent took to Twitter with a fan-hashtag request, promising great rewards if everyone chimed in on a chorus of #strangemercy. Her call was answered, and she released “Surgeon” today, the first song from her forthcoming third album Strange Mercy. The song is a noticeable departure from the orchestral, Disney-inspired magic of 2009′s Actor, as well as the more guitar-centric feel of her debut, Marry Me. Here, she favors synthetic drums beats, Casio-style keys and fluttery flute-like additions that slowly build into an odd Future Shock funk number; in other words, it’s St. Vincent, at the club. Let the remixes begin. [Download/Stream "Surgeon" here.]

Strange Mercy is out September 13 via 4AD.
