In addition to showcasing oddball alternative comedy, we’re learning that the Adult Swim production crew has a knack for promoting seductive alternative music. This summer the Adult Swim Singles Program, a series of free weekly downloads, has included buzzworthy bands Best Coast, How to Dress Well and Clams Casino. Their latest freebie is an out-of-left-field collaboration between Swedish dream-pop duo jj and smooth R&B singer Ne-Yo. Such an unlikely pairing is likely inspired by previous jj takes on other stateside hip-hop and R&B singles, including loose interpretations of Akon’s “Troublemaker,” Jeremih’s “Birthday Sex,” and Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop.”
“We Can’t Stop” is an atmospheric-sex ballad that moves through different mini-suites, opening with an eerie sequence of piano notes and mellow synths that could soundtrack Scarface’s demise. Midway the song dribbles into near silence, until Ne-Yo’s progressive vocals pick up where jj takes a breather. As his vocals peak, an electric guitar riff hints at the upcoming drop, where striding drums and a Passion Pit-like melody breaks the previously inescapable sexual anxiety. An acapella from jj carries the outro, completing the natural cycle of yearning, satisfaction and triumph. In other words, the R&B staples.
