20 year-old Sam Walton hails from Manchester. And the great tracks he’s been posting on his Soundcloud page for the better part of a year have been mirroring the boundary stretching taking place in UK dance music over that time. What started as dubstep in the late ‘00s, has consumed house, techno, dancehall, modern R&B and a globe’s worth of club beats, to create the indescribable sound of Now!
Which is how “808 Vybzin,” off Walton’s self-titled debut EP for Kode 9’s massive Hyperdub label, can seem completely contemporary while at the same time echoing Larry Heard’s classic Chicago house grooves and the sun-splashed Balearic melodies of Ibiza. It’s a slice of laid-back beauty and futuristic funk, produced near where the urban riots are happening – which is to say…same as it ever was!
The Walton EP is out September 5 via Hyperdub.
