When it came to producing “When You’re Dancing,” the lead single off his self-titled EP, Minneapolis-based DJ/producer Gigamesh took both a methodical and rushed approach to his sound. “It was a really simple thing I was working on for months, but I eventually decided to add some synths, write some lyrics and have my friend [Miami-based DJ/musician] Induce sing on it,” Gigamesh tells Hive. “But it took us under 45 minutes to record all the vocals in his apartment, and most were first takes.”

Inspired by a girl the producer had been pursuing for about three years, “When You’re Dancing” nods to the funky house of Basement Jaxx and swirling, atmospheric buildups of classic acid house. The Kraftwerk-styled robotic techno of the original song is still faintly present, but RAC augments this version with funky horn blasts and squelchy synths that will make Haçienda regulars nostalgic for all-night X parties.

Gigamesh EP is out October 18 on Our Label International.
