CMJ band to watch The Stepkids wasn’t like most other young bands at the festival. And that’s not just because they evoke and update a very slinky, very particular era of ’70s blue-eyed R&B. The band also stands alone because their members try very hard, in a very good way: from their spotless all-white uniforms, to their masterful instrumental solos, to their visual artist on-site to handle the projections, everything about this trio feels kinda super professional. It’s a nice change from the too-cool-to-try bands that fill up most CMJ setlists. Check out Live in NYC videos of this band of pros at Hive’s official CMJ party inside the Studio at Webster Hall. They combine snakey basslines and 5th Dimensional harmonies for “Suburban Dream,” while “Shadows On Behalf” is a particularly chewy slice of bubblegum psychedelia. And when the amen-inducing rhythm kicks in on “Cup Half Full,” you’ll know what to do. The light is right there. Walk on in.
