Caithlin De Marrais, “Hot Day” — Song Premiere

“Hot Day” wasn’t an easy track for Caithlin De Marrais to record.

“I literally shredded my vocal cords recording “Hot Day,” she explained. “Tears were streaming down my face during tracking. There was a feeling of desperation in the lyrics and I was reckless in a way I hadn’t been since the early days of Rainer Maria when I would regularly lose my voice on tour.”

And that comes through on the song. The former singer and bassist for ur-emo band Rainer Maria recorded Red Coat, her second and latest solo record in bits and pieces while her newborn slept. The song is a driving and haunting, where De Marrias’ voice drips over horns, at times almost whispering and at others crescendoing into the refrain of “I wanna run.”

It was a calculated move, she said.

“The primal yell in there is about running away from responsibility,”she explained. “It is a homage to Patti Smith’s ‘Horses’ and 1970s-era crime films like The French Connection, Taxi Driver and Dirty Harry.”

Red Coat is out November 8 on End Up Records.
