Portugese electronic collective Buraka Som Sistema’s “Up All Night” was a clear dance highlight on Komba, the group’s second album released earlier this year. It’s partially thanks to the group’s signature pop-meets-kuduro spin on the track, where the traditional Angolan carnival sounds of soca and zouk are mixed with Buraka’s own house and techno inflections. Here Montreal’s DJ duo Botnek’s edits the already energetic original track to create an explosive club banger. The song’s ominous intro synths are subdued to make way for a thudding bass drum, rapid cowbell melodies, and an addictive clap track that has an almost ghetto-tech feel to it. A third of the way in, the piercing set of laser-gun rave synths kick in. And so begins a pattern: A gradually building wave of sub-bass, bloated drops and uptempo drums lead into yet another penetrating alarm. If the original wasn’t already enough to motivate you on the dance floor, this acid-trip of a remix surely will.
