Well, Madonna‘s Super Bowl Halftime Extravaganza definitely delivered — the question is whether it delivered anything we actually ordered. Sunday night we got hordes of shirtless gladiator-dancers (meanwhile, props to Madge for dressing her age), sword sound effects, Madonna stumbling on a bleacher before shuffling with LMFAO, Cee Lo dressed as a glittery Jawa, and a “World Peace” proclamation shoehorned in at the end. But in between all the pelvic thrusts and guest cameos (and M.I.A.’s flipping of the bird), Madonna “sang” hits old and new: “Vogue,” “Music,” “Give Me All Your Luvin,’” “Open Your Heart,” and “Like A Prayer.” With so many moving parts (Madonna’s creaky, Namath-in-’76 knees notwithstanding), it was hard to keep track of it all, so it’s not surprising the reactions to the performance were just as scattershot.
Right after the spectacle, we took to Twitter to see how Madonna’s fellow musicians felt about it. After sifting through dozens of tweets, it’s clear those in the business of performing music thought she nailed it. And they thought she sucked. And the combination of sheer star power and over-the-top-ness made it the best halftime show ever. But also, the convergence of oversaturated lip-synching stars and a bad mix resulted in an unholy mess.
Since Madonna apparently is the new Lana Del Rey and nobody can see eye-to-eye on her, we’ve cataloged the best musician reactions in five handy categories below. So take a look, and remember: whatever your final take is, we can all agree the real star of the show was that creepy ginger tightrope-dancer.
1. She killed it
2. She bombed
3. That was great … maybe?
