Though underrated Detroit indie-pop band PAS/CAL disbanded in 2008, Casimer Pascal wasn’t done making music. He was just done with Detroit. After relocating to Chicago he hooked up with his 20-year old nephew, the similarly named Vincent Casimir, and thus a new duo, Casimer & Casimir was formed. The band approaches writing and recording in a piecemeal fashion, meaning once a song’s done, they’re releasing it, with no ambitions of doing it all for that coveted LP release party.
“Retiree” is their newest song, which Pascal describes as a mish-mosh of electro-acoustic instruments and modern/classical arrangements. Specifically, this song is a space-funk R&B jam that details life after the rat race and a gossip session Pascal found himself having one afternoon with his father-in-law.
“I heard myself talking about some pretty distasteful things, as we were all gossiping away like lil’ ol’ ladies,”Pascal recalls. “I started to meditate on how cruel we can be to the people we hold dear when they ain’t seated amongst us … and how story leads to story to story to story.” Cruel, perhaps, but if a song like this is the result, we’re okay with it.
