For reasons unclear, the “diss track” hasn’t made its way into jangle-rock territory, but London quartet Django Django could certainly change that with “Default.” “The idea to do a song that was based on an old school hip hop ‘diss’ track, but aimed at no one,” says drummer David Maclean. “So it’s just a load of put-down lines strung together.”
While “Default” may not exact a certain lyrical revenge, it recalls the ’60s psychedelic sound of bands like the Animals or Strawberry Alarm Clock, with a blast of modern electronic sounds weaved throughout. “[It's a] basic tribal beat, a rock n’ roll style riff,” Maclean says. “It’s weird listening back to it once you’ve forgotten where your head was at but I think it represents our love of both early rock n’ roll, dance rhythms and oddball pop.”
Django Django’s self-titled, debut album was recently released in the U.K. on Because Music and they’re currently exploring how to release it in the U.S.
