Chicago trio volcano! earned praise for their jagged electro-pop on 2008’s Paperwork and “Piñata,” the first single and title track from their upcoming album, follows in that spirit. Wavering in tempo and mood, the track has the feel and sound of a papier-mâché toy being swung at in the air, and feels on the brink of collapse. This literal imagery is the group’s intention though, as they say the song’s about “karmic retribution, basing it off a dream their lead singer Aaron With had about witnessing his own funeral. “I turned the protagonist of my dream into a piñata and threw a revenge fantasy on top of it,” he says, “because the dream imagery was pretty mundane.” “Piñata,” is anything but though, with brassy synths, dense percussion, and a sound that moves between melody and dissonance.
Piñata is out June 12 on The Leaf Label.
