Without having to embellish it with technical virtuosity or clever mixing sequences, DJ Lefto’s weekly live Studio Brussels mix is one that breathes, inhaling and exhaling disparate genres seamlessly. “Listening to the mix live is pretty much the best time as I usually play with the vibe created by Twitter reactions, emails,” Lefto explains to Hive. “Let’s say that if I get emails from people stuck in traffic coming back from the beach I would play something that would relax them or make them forget about it.” Genre-wise, everything from funk, Brazilian jazz, hip-hop and and U.K. bass are represented, all selections under the general umbrella of worldly, enlivening break beats. The dichotomy between the Robert Glasper Experiment’s pleasant “Fever” and the Quakers raucous “What Chew Want” looks unbridgeable on paper, but works surprisingly well. “I try to connect the dots,” he says. “That’s what people know me for, going from one genre to another but in a way people don’t realize.”
DJ Lefto’s show airs every Sunday 7pm-9pm GMT+1 on www.stubru.be and is available on his Mixcloud page thereafter.
