New Hack Gives Morse Code a Musical Edge

Reviving vintage (read: outdated) tech has been all the rage lately in the music world — from flexis to cassettes to the increasingly popular (and tricked-out) vinyl. Well, brace yourself for a whole new level of throwback musicality: Morsecore.

OK, so “Morsecore” isn’t exactly a real thing, but there is a brand new hack on the scene that allows you to create Morse-coded audio messages and post them to Soundcloud, as well as translate code back into words.

Simply visit the website — titled Morsecloud — and type in a line of text. You can then share it on Soundcloud as a waveform, which will play the text as Morse code. The result is a pretty rad little sample that could easily be included in a more “traditional” track. The service also, apparently, allows you to send coded messages to other users and to translate messages sent to you, but we had some issues getting that functionality to work (it’s a hack, afterall).

Obviously, Morsecloud was created as more of a diversion than anything else, but the concept is pretty cool all the same. Therefore, we’re looking at you, musically inclined readers: Let’s make this Morsecore thing happen!

Below is a test I conducted with the lyric: “I want it that way.”
