You may remember (or await) that period between late adolescence and adulthood with humiliation, discontent, or dread, but Bear Ceuse make the most out of it in their coming-of-age track “My Friends.” Accepting the sad fact that not all of their friends will remain close companions in the next era, the Brooklyn four-piece indie rock outfit blazes through their anxiety with revving guitar chords, jagged bass, and clanging percussion. “The song was built off whims,” singer Cameron Matthews says. “Every time I listen to “My Friends” it makes me laugh because we basically recorded it with our eyes closed.” But the moments when Bear Ceuse slow down, and Matthews’ vocals fade into a melancholic french horn solo, isn’t the sound of teen boys trying to find themselves; it’s the sound of grown musicians embracing adult contemporary. Indeed, Matthews says, “I am continually battling being young and dumb. Bring on the maturity already.”
