As we pointed outrecently, there’s been a nice revival of lo-fi, oddball R&B and Sam Mehran’s Outer Limitz project is another exuberant, earnest example, combining an R-rated version of the Pet Shop Boys’ synth pop with Bel Biv Devoe’s new jack swing.
His first single “I Kontact” bumps with a chunky synth line, while mixing in a large palate of clean, electronic textures that bristle excitedly with a dance club vibe. Mehran sings with a cool, adolescent detachment, making lines like “What the fuck you gon’ be scared of girl, I ain’t gonna bite,” ring with a subtle sexual charge rather than an aggressive awkwardness. His sincere affection for this era of music is certainly contagious and forces any listener of “I Kontact” to drop their post-modern pretensions at the door and enjoy this music for what it is: fun.
