Portland, Ore. power punks Mean Jeans are lucky that they sound like a party band, because how else could the three-piece get away with a song like “Ready 2 Rip”? We’re lucky they did — after all the song was almost lost to the dumpster of time.
“Billy came up with the core of the music a while back, maybe a year or so ago and we jammed it a couple times,” explains drummer and vocalist Jeans Wilder. “Then when it became crunch time and we had to make a new album, we brought it back and added some more stupid stuff like fake guitar mess-ups and key changes. Then we made it the first song on our new album.”
Good thing they did. The rollicking, sneering cut runs on pure adrenaline and makes a sweaty, boozy case for dropping whatever it is you’re doing and cracking a drink right now.
As guitarist and singer Billy Jeans says, “We wanted to make it clear we are ready, that we were born ready, with lines about twistometer hats and Jager bombs … and about doing other tight stuff like picking up whip-its and it being the last night on earth. The song is also about being ready to die, if that’s what it’s gonna take to have a good time.”
