Last September, Phonte released his solo debut Charity Starts at Home, and just in time for warmer weather, he’s enlivened the feel-good posse cut “The Life of Kings” with this new video. Nothing says spring like fresh kicks and graphic tees under a crystal blue sky, with collaborators Big K.R.I.T. and 9th Wonder bobbing merrily along with the soft violin melody and boom-bap percussion. The oddest part: Evidence, who’s on the cut, seems to have missed his flight but Mama Tigallo, Phonte’s mother, steps in and lip-syncs along to EV’s surprisingly mom-friendly verse. All in all it’s a happy-go-lucky session, and a pleasant reminder of how glorious easygoing hip-hop can be on a sunny day.
