Oakland’s Twin Steps outfitted their Tumblr with a fast food theme and, listening to their late-night freeform soul tracks, that choice doesn’t seem ironic. “Son of Sam” is the fast food equivalent of pop with its syrupy melody, thick layers of saxophones and guitar, oversized harmonies, and drunken lyrics that progressively weigh heavily on the listener. There’s a hopelessness in the opening line “I can’t tell you who you are to blame, cause to me they’re all the same, can’t stand myself and I can’t stand up,” that has the feel of a stumbling college kid who’s given up on his night, but his sorrow his real. The four-piece band say their songs aim to relay the impending decay of love, and, while “Son of Sam” goes down easy, it has the potential to stick with you for a while.
