On CHAPPO’s debut album Moonwater, it’s clear that this Brooklyn band has a knack for mixing the loveliest elements of classic cock-rock with a more psychedelic, garage sound. You can hear this front and center on their second single “Explode,” a song that feels like a call to arms. And it sort of is, as they explain it. “[The song is] a feeling of desperation you get when you’re in a state of inertia and a sudden burst of action is just below the surface,” says keyboardist Chris Olson. “It was one of the first songs we wrote on the album and it’s been our opener on live shows because it’s so good at getting us in that head space.” And like any good explosion, there’s a comedown — be sure to stick around for the spacey outro, a perfect way to cap off this short burst of aural energy.

Moonwater is out May 15 on Majordomo.
