Chandeliers Mesmerize on “Le Corsage” — Song Premiere

Chicago’s Chandeliers are dreaming up a new way to pay homage to the ‘80s modern soul and R&B they grew up listening to. Like Nite Jewel and Toro Y Moi, the five-piece dance act are spinning their influences into a lo-fi sound that feels untethered and astute, with a greater focus on the intersection between technology and human warmth. Their new single “Le Corsage” floats between both with bouncy synths, faint bass, and a tender vocal line throughout, which singer Emma Yohanan recorded candidly in one take. At times, her shimmering coo even blends in with the synths. “The singer’s voice becomes an instrument and more attention is put on her tone and her breath to convey emotion rather than lyrics,” band member Chris Kalis explains. The effect is mesmerizing, and keeps us reaching to hit play.
