Matt Pinfield Talks With Mark Ronson For ‘The Hivecast’

Mark Ronson

Amy Winehouse’s death inspired shock and sorrow across the music industry, but producer/musician/DJ Mark Ronson took it particularly tough on that tragic day last summer. Speaking with Matt Pinfield on the inaugural edition of Hive’s new podcast “The Hivecast,” Ronson reveals that he was actually in the studio with Beth Ditto and the Gossip working on their new album A Joyful Noise when he heard the news. Winehouse’s passing put his work in perspective, as he remembered his partnership with the singer. “It was really strange,” Ronson confesses. “It was almost like a turning point. When I found out that Amy passed I was in disbelief. I walked out of the session and I never fully came back to [A Joyful Noise]. I don’t know what it was to be honest. I think the main thing, the chemistry of what we had going on with the Gossip album wasn’t really amazing and being reminded about how good it is when it’s good, maybe I thought I was forcing something.” That lack of a “special something” didn’t keep him away from the recording knobs for too long — Ronson recorded with Rufus Wainwright last fall on Out of the Game, which was recently released to critical acclaim.
