tUnE-YarDs, Questlove, Angelique Kidjo, and Akua Naru Cover Fela Kuti

It’s easy to get musicians from disparate backgrounds together when it’s for a good cause, which is how you end up with tUnE-yArDs, ?uestlove, Angelique Kidjo, and Akua Naru all jamming on Fela Kuti’s “Lady.” Their take is an appropriately funky group jam, with ?uesto and tUnE-yArDs bassist Nate Brenner anchoring things on the all-important rhythm section while a four-piece horn section brings the noise. Meanwhile Kidjo teams with Merrill Garbus for vocals and Akua Naru drops in around the three-minute mark to spit a pair of verses. The whole result is a frantic, frenetic, dizzying ode to both womanhood and Fela — more or less perfect, in other words.

The track comes from the forthcoming (Red) Hot + Fela compilation, a collaboration between the Red Hot Foundation and (Red), both of which harness the power of musicians and celebrities for AIDS awareness, prevention, and education. [Via Pitchfork.]

(Red) Hot + Fela is due sometime in 2013 on Knitting Factory Records. Stream “Lady” below:
