Legendary Brit band the Cult swooped down on Terminal 5 Friday night to support their most recent album, 2012’s Choice of Weapon. The band played “For the Animals” and others from the new LP, but they also dug into the Cults discography (now nine studio LPs deep) to play hits like “She Sells Sanctuary” and “Fire Woman.” According to Hive photographer Rebecca Smeyne, front man (and newlywed) Ian Astbury threw several tambourines into the audience during their set. If you caught one, does that mean you’re the next to get married? Possibly.
Against Me!’s Tom Gabel made her live debut as Laura Jane Grace late last month, but this show was still the first time many of the band’s longtime fans saw her in person. Their audience responded positively: The guys still sang along with the band’s songs, and a girl behind Smeyne even held up a hand-painted sign that read, “I Love Laura.” Fittingly, Against Me! did a cover of the Replacements’ “Androgynous,” and as a surprise, Joan Jett came out to sing with Grace (who looked very glam rock herself). It was a nice way for Jett to show her support — in fact, the Rolling Stone article announcing Grace’s transition mentions that “[Grace’s daughter] Evelyn thought Daddy looked like her Joan Jett Barbie.”
