Kurt Vile released his critically acclaimed set Smoke Ring for My Halo a little over a year ago, but it still feels so new. Why is that? Maybe because the Philadelphia troubadour is still touring strong on that album. Or maybe there’s a more “hairy” explanation. “His music sounds a lot like the way his hair looks: Gorgeous, flowing, full of body, but not overly “pretty,’” says Hive photographer Rebecca Smeyne of Vile’s Summerstage gig this past weekend in Central Park. “The split-ends and tangles come together in a perfect dark melancholy.”
