The final evening of Philip Glass’s three-night benefit for Issue Project Room began with a short duet between Glass and iconic experimental artist Laurie Anderson. The latter remained on stage for a solo set, including a spoken word piece (which Hive photographer Rebecca Smeyne said was “both haunting and humorous”) and a vocal piece she created using a “pillow speaker” (a soft earpiece you can slip into your pillow to listen to music while in bed). Next synth musician Ben Vida and percussionist Ryan Sawyer improvised together, before Glass returned to the stage to play his 1981 composition Mad Rush. Afterwards pianist Trevor Gureckis and vocalist Tara Hugo performed selections from Book of Longing: A Song Cycle based on the Poetry and Artwork of Leonard Cohen. As you can see in the gallery below, Glass kept the evening loose (he introduced the musicians himself) and intimate, fitting since the event was billed simply as “Philip Glass: Music With Friends.” Smeyne also caught actor and longtime Issue Project Room supporter Steve Buscemi (he sits on the board for the nonprofit) in the second row. Maybe we’ll see the space in an episode of Boardwalk Empire next season?
