Danish beatmaker Tomas Barfod proved he can write a pop song damn well on his recently-released album Salton Sea. With its twinkling production and Nina Kinert’s swelling vocals, “November Skies” is one of the most lingering tracks we’ve heard all year. Barfod flashes his mastery of melody in a different way on this instrumental “Hyperion,” a zagging outtake from Salton Sea. With chimes, organ drones, cowbell riffs, and snare pulses alternately dancing at the forefront of the song, “Hyperion” is a collection of tiny noises that push the melody to expand and contract often. “Hyperion was a track we all loved when I made the album but it didn’t seem to fit in,” Barfod told Hive. “It’s a strange combination of booty bass and live, funky instrumentation that makes the track [feel like a] paranoid, ‘70s soundtrack.” Which is one case of paranoia we wouldn’t mind feeling.
