Neo-folk artist Damien DeRose, who writes and records delicate ballads as Peasant, has a real down-to-earth, relatable quality. It’s not just because he takes his moniker from the line, “We’re all fucking peasants, as far as I can see” in John Lennon’s “Working Class Heroes”; DeRose’s humble, heart-wrenching lyrics provide catharsis. His songs are easy to dwell in, particularly the tale of lost love, “Amends,” from his recently-released sophomore album Bound for Glory. In this pared-down rendition, DeRose strums through the first three verses with a percussionist and bassist and finishes with a sanguine guitar solo. We dare you not to feel things.
