Hive Five: Our daily listicle of musical musings
Everyone loves Instagram, the social-media photo-editing app that lets you over-saturate blurry pictures of your dinner and then spam your friends on Facebook with them. But while high profile rap types like 50 Cent and Funkmaster Flex have gained followings for their revealing photo skills, some honorable rap types have been content to play humble and invoke the brand name in rhyme. Here’s the five best of those who are lyrically Instagramming it up.
1. Nas, “Daughters”
After Nas’s daughter tweeted pics of a box of condoms she keeps in her bedroom for her special company, the rapper was moved to write a song about it. Cue the moment of self-revelation when Nas admitted, “A box of condoms on her dresser then she Instagrammed it/ At this point I realized I ain’t the strictest parent.” It’s unclear whether they then bonded over her use of the Hollywood filter.
2. Game, “Death Penalty”
Kudos to Jayceon for not just attempting some sort of drug selling Instagram quip — here he’s lamenting how “n****s spamming my Instagram, begging me for they bitch back/ Sending threats to my DM/ Trying to hack my email.” Perhaps it’s time to ditch the Hotmail account.
3. Wale feat. French Montana & Wiz Khalifa, “I Be Puttin’ On”
It’s Diddy new best man servant, French Montana, who grabs the social-photo-media spoils here, opening the song’s climaxing verse by stating, “I be cooler than a motherfucker/ Wanna hit the fans, selling work on the Internet — call it Instagram.” We’ve got five on this one being a case of drug-selling word play.
4. Joey Bada$$, “Summer Knights”
17-year-old Flatbush tyke Joey Bada$$ has already solidified his spot as New York City’s brightest young rap thing, but on the opener to his recent 1999 mixtape he play it cool. While musing on the early trappings of insta-fame, he raps about being “with your chick in the cam, rolling through an Instagram/ Got it with the grams, everybody say they dissed a fan.” Then the laid-back kicker: “Know the haters too jelly but fuck it though, it’s the jam!”
5. Stalley, “Route 21″
In which Rick Ross’s best man with a stupendous beard whines how he’s just spilt liquor on his new Barkley sneakers while searching for his car keys, having previously showed the all-white kicks off to the world via “the Instagram photos.” Although if Stalley’s really contemplating drinking and driving, he might do well to read up on the plight of E.P.M.D.’s pal Frank B.
