The Avalanches Mix Post-Apocalyptic Disco as Cool Gaze

Editor’s Note: The Avalanches have been very coy about what is or isn’t new music from them, and have since tweeted that this mix is in fact not theirs.

Elusive Australian electronic trio the Avalanches seem more primed than ever to release a follow-up to their classic 2000 debut Since I Left You. Since April, they’ve released two divergently themed mixtapes, the dreamy Sleepy Bedtime Mix for Young Ones and this week’s robotic funk mix Cool Gays, a cold post-apocalyptic disco set. Metallic filtered vocals and amelodic beeps pepper cuts like Transvolta’s “Computer Disco;” a pixelated garble acts as the lead melody in Walsh’s “Be Cool Mang;” and Kano’s 1981 release “She’s a Star” is included as a space-disco throwback. Only towards the end does the mix warm up with a refreshing snippet of “a track that may or may not be the Avalanches” that features a twangy rhythm guitar and cooing female vocals, making it clear we’re oh-so-ready for that Left You follow up.
