With each release, Teengirl Fantasy are proving to be one of the more versatile electronic artists making music today. While their standout debut, 2010’s 7AM, showed off their ability to curate and recontextualize samples, building them into melodic montages that completely of their own, the duo of Nick Weiss and Logan Takahashi flex their muscle for live instrumentation on their forthcoming sophomore album Tracer. Their new full-length has moments of 7AM’s hazy disco, but Weiss and Takahashi swing at more genres on Tracer like techno (“Eternal”), experimental pop (“EFX”), R&B (“Do It”), and house (“Timeline”). They’ve enlisted a solid roster of artists here too: Panda Bear, Romanthony, Laurel Halo, and Kelela all contribute vocals.
Teengirl Fantasy’s Tracer is out 8/21 via True Panther/R&S. Stream it now at NPR.
