It’s always satisfying when DJs’ personalities shine through their performances, especially when those two DJs are Dirtybird’s humor-filled duo Claude VonStroke and Justin Martin. Their recent two-hour guest spot on BBC Radio One’s Diplo & Friends translates like a Will Ferrell stoner movie, written by Andy Beta. The selected tracks and short banter breaks make for a set that feels carefree; the erratic, impulsive rhythms of their tech-house, hip-hop and drum and bass selections are laced with inside jokes and corny accents. You can practically hear the two guys giggling in the studio when “Next Episode” drops after “Nick’s Episode,” a disco-tech dance track that samples Dr. Dre’s hit from 2001. And you can feel the same energy when they drop Doom amid more serious, but equally funky deep house.
