“Don’t sit in the front row unless you like glitter!” warns Kitty Pryde, while driving home from her day gig at accessory emporium Clare’s in Daytona Beach. It’s good advice for her show tonight at Santos Party House in New York City, where the youthful female rap mistress promises, “… lots of big plans and a really fun surprise” as redemption for an earlier show in Brooklyn which was met with critical disdain. “I’m determined to make this the most fun and exciting show,” she says. “And no one’s allowed to talk shit about it on their blog this time.”
For Kitty, her second New York show is the latest achievement in a quick-rise career that that sparked when her video for “Okay Cupid” went viral, and now includes a collaboration with Riff Raff and some sort of relationship with Danny Brown. So while Kitty cruised home before jetting to New York, Hive called her up to pester her about Riff Raff’s claims of supping beer with her dad, how she became text buddies with comedy writer BJ Novak, and what her wedding to Danny Brown would be like.
A lot has been written about you on the Internet, but what’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve read about yourself?
There’s a lot about me hooking up with Riff Raff, which is very creepy to me. I’m like, “Eeww, come on, no!”
Riff Raff told us that he had a good time drinking beer with your dad. Is that true?
[Laughs.] My dad doesn’t like when Riff Raff says that! He said it in another interview, and my dad was like, “People are going to think I’m a drunk.” So I am going to clarify: My dad and Riff Raff both had a beer. It was very low key. They definitely didn’t get trashed together; there was no partying going on with Riff Raff and my dad.
How did you come to make “Orion’s Belt,” the song you did with Riff Raff?
The day I came out with the “Okay Cupid” video, he sent me a message on Twitter. He didn’t say anything about doing a song at first, he just called me by a weird name. I was like, “Whose name is that?” I thought maybe he was calling me some celebrity’s name. But I Googled the name and it wasn’t anything; it was just a weird Riff Raff moment, like Riff Raff has a pet name for me! So that turned into the idea to make a song. I sent him a beat I had on my computer and then a few days later he was like, “We’re in Daytona, we’re gonna do a video tomorrow.”
On your Tumblr you talk about BJ Novack texting you. How did you become text friends with him?
One time, I saw that him and Mindy Kaling were tweeting and she made a joke about me and someone sent it to me, like, “Oh my god, Mindy Kaling is tweeting about you!” I was like “Holy shit!” so I tweeted at her and I guess BJ Novack saw that we were talking to each other on Twitter and he followed me. Every time a famous person follows me I send them a message to say hi just ’cause it’s really exciting. So I said hey to him and he was like, “I’m a big fan, you’re cool, you’re awesome.” He told me he wanted me to play a show in L.A. and said he was gonna try and get me a show. Eventually we talked about other things and I told him to give me his number and now we text about random things.
What sort of random things do you and BJ Novack text about?
Everything! Like, he follows my mom on twitter and he just thinks she’s funny. I’ve had a really deep conversation with him about Elvis and why people get fixated on Elvis.
Why is that?
I think because he had such an interesting life story and his music is really… I don’t know. I can’t even explain it. I have a thing for Elvis; I have an Elvis tattoo. Elvis is one of my heroes.
Would you say Riff Raff is the rap game Elvis?
No, I definitely would not say that!
If BJ Novak and Mindy Kaling wrote a sitcom about you, what would it be like?
[Laughs.] Well my life feels like a sitcom right now! It feels like they’re already writing my life — really weird dumb things are happening. I think if they wrote a sitcom about my life they’d probably have Riff Raff discovering me and then we’d make a song and that already happened.
You mentioned getting excited when famous people follow you on Twitter. Who have you been most excited about?
First, Danny Brown, and he was the first one, and I think I cried when he followed me. I’m pretty sure that happened. And Lil B followed me the other day, and I know he follows everybody back pretty much — he follows a shit load of people — but I wasn’t even following him. He found me.
Do you have a crush on Danny Brown?
Yeah, we have the same manager!
Did having a crush on Danny Brown affect that decision?
It didn’t affect my judgement necessarily. Me and Danny are kinda like close, and we work together, so it kinda made sense. I had met the manager at a photo shoot and we got along really well. I didn’t pick him because he was Danny’s manager.
So what would a Kitty Pryde and Danny Brown wedding be like?
I think if you ask Danny it would be some very kinky thing! But I would just have a princess wedding.
Kitty Pryde’s Haha, I’m Sorry is out now. Download it at Bandcamp.
