Four Tet Spins Strictly Vinyl for Solid Steel Radio

Four Tet is one of the most absorbing, off-kilter producers in electronic music today, but ultimately he’s just a plain old music nerd. In a mix he put together for Ninja Tune’s Solid Steel Radio show on August 17, the UK producer left the fancy equipment at home, proving that even in 2012, a stack of faded vinyl is enough for a riveting mix. Here, we don’t even have a track list per se, just a photo (seen above) of all the record sleeves he used. The tracks feature gentle transfers from keyboard jazz solos into flourishing Spanish guitar ballads into haunting drum breaks that accentuates feelings of dissonance the standalone tracks already tout. Like walking through an unexplored basement, the anticipation of something scary lurking around the corner is here, but in reality only forgotten treasures await.
