This weekend, waves of neon-clad bass addicts will brave a deceptively hot early September sun, long water lines and jam-packed buses to attend New York City’s Electric Zoo festival on Randall’s Island. For some, this sounds like straight up torture. But hey, at least the DJs aren’t actually forced to perform in cages. For all the serotonin-zapping dubstep and progressive house headliners that will be attracting the biggest crowds, the E-Zoo lineup touts some classier “intelligent dance” DJs, too. Apparat, who is performing Sunday before Boys Noize and Marco Carola, is certainly one of them. This week, Apparat dropped off a mix to Resident Advisor that for him, “brings back old ’80s childhood memories.” No wobbles or Dutch-house synths here; he sticks with deep, ambient, melodic bass music from the likes of M83, Julio Bashmore, Daphni and Glass Candy. It’s probably not what the Kandi-rocking kids come to the festival looking for, but it’s a totally danceable sonic reprieve from otherwise low-end-driven hysteria.
