Fucked Up Working on ‘David’ Follow-Up

Fucked Up haven’t exactly been quiet since the release of last year’s Polaris Music Prize-nominated rock opera David Comes to Life – a heavy dose of touring and releasing the album-length 12’’ “Year of the Tiger” kept the Toronto punk-rockers busy. But they still found time for their next couple of releases. “We’re working on the new record,” bassist Sandy Miranada told Hive at FYF Festival this past weekend. Guitarist Mike Heliechuk added, “We have 40 songs that we have to chop down. They’re more loose, more punk-sounding. I think the plan for this record is to make it a little bit different. It could very well just sound like all the other records but I think we’re going to experiment more with different instruments.” The currently untitled album doesn’t have an official release date yet and the pair weren’t sure if they’ll be working with Shane Stonebeck, who produced the last record, again.

While we’re waiting for their next proper full-length, there’s a chance we’ll first see the follow-up to “Year of the Tiger.” “We have slated the new ‘Year of the Rabbit’,” Miranada said about the next installment in their series of songs for each year of the Chinese Zodiac. “We’re really behind on the Zodiac calendar but we’re working on ‘Year of the Rabbit’ next. It’s sort of a meandering, psychedelic playground.” And as we know, the Fucked Up merry-go-round is quite enjoyable.
