When it came time for South African musician Jean-Philip Grobler to pick a name for his one-man project that he describes as “tropical-world pop,” he opened a map and dropped a pen. The third try landed on the island of St. Lucia, off the coast of Africa, a place where he vacationed growing up. That settled it: St. Lucia would be the name that embodied his breezy, horn-filled throwback pop. In this First Take, Hive’s series on emerging artists, you can get the St. Lucia experience up-close-and-personal with the sultry summer singles “All Eyes on You” and “Closer Than This.” Grobler recorded everything himself on his debut, self-titled EP, but he never felt it was necessary to translate the songs for a live setting. Here he rounds up a full band to compliment his melodic compositions, and completes things with a killer sax solo — which no tropical pop song should be without.
