Hive Five: Our Daily Listicle of Musical Musings
When not plotting to open her own Chipotle franchise out in Turks and Caicos, Angel Haze can be found hopping on other rappers’ tracks and dropping some of the slickest freestyles around. Yesterday she turned her hand to Chicago rugged child Chief Keef‘s “I Don’t Like” — which seemed like a fine excuse to pluck five of her best.
1. Chief Keef’s “I Don’t Like”
Chief Keef’s original “I Don’t Like” is like a laborious list of things that he definitely won’t be asking for on his Christmas list (“snitch n****s,” “sneak dissers” and “playing both sides” all make the cut). Haze ups the lyrical hi-jinks for her take, delivering a blistering rap and then signing off with a cheeky “Bug off!”
2. Drake‘s “Marvin’s Room”
Coming off like an answer record to Drake’s original, Haze sings and spits her way over the sultry song like the long-lost member of TLC. And pay close attention to the new killer chorus: “Fuck that new girl that you think you found/ I know you’re with her because I’m not around.”
3. Lil Wayne‘s “6 Foot 7 Foot”
Warp-speed rapping ahoy! Angel Haze resolutely rips through one of Weezy’s calling cards, complete with the Big Tymers-worthy brag, “PETA-ass bitches know, they don’t want the beef or nothin’/ Pull they eyes out they socket – they don’t got to see me stuntin’.”
Rapping a cappella, Angel Haze takes inspiration from Watch the Throne‘s opening cut and uses it to air out her own views on the “dog eat dog world” around her. (Studious note: This one comes prefaced with Angel’s own explanatory commentary!)
5. Nicki Minaj‘s “Roman’s Revenge”
Another Young Money work-over, this time with Ms. Minaj in Haze’s headlights. The outcome? Nothing more than an awesome wave of relentless raps.
