Israeli duo Hank & Cupcakes offer a lot more substance than their fluffy namesake implies. In fact, the bustling synthpop outfit take their name from the work and life of author Charles Bukowski. “In his stories his name is always ‘Hank’ and he used the nickname ‘Cupcakes’ for one of his many real life lovers,” the band explains. Likewise, the group have been imparting a gritty realism to their dance tracks. Their latest banger “Sweet Potion” is filled equally with disappointment and hoppy synths. “It was written during a time in which we were dealing with a group of people who made us lose a little of our faith in humanity,” they said. Still, “Sweet Potion” goes down easy.
