On Nov. 12, producer/multi-instrumentalist Tom Skinner — known artistically as Hello Skinny — will release his debut album on Slowfoot Records, a multifaceted effort that showcases his diverse musical influences. Skinner is involved in a number of creative projects including Matthew Herbert’s One Pig and Sons Of Kemet with reeds man Shabaka Hutchings and label mates Oren Marshall and Sebastian Rochford.

As a precursor to the forthcoming album, Hello Skinny calls on the handiwork of pioneering beat experimentalist Matthew Herbert, who was recently appointed creative director of BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop. During Herbert’s career, he has produced or remixed the likes of Bjork, R.E.M. and Yoko Ono. Here, Herbert uses deep synthesizers and robotic drums to rework Hello Skinny’s “Aquarius” into a hypnotic song of quiet power; it’s still quite danceable, though the mood is a bit ominous.
