Local Natives Hit the Beach Backward in “Breakers” Video

The newest Local Native‘s single “Breakers” is dreamy and jangly, just the way we like them. But what sets this song apart from their previous work on their 2009 debut Gorilla Manor is the rat-a-tat drums and decidedly solemn vibe, a likely byproduct of touring with the National and Arcade Fire. In this new Jaffe Zinn-directed video, the band play their hearts out, wander the beach aimlessly and plunge into pools with their clothes on. The scenes of men tumbling down stairs and moving backward through time are meant to be linked but feel fragmented, leaving the viewer to guess at the storyline, which seems to involve a kidnapping. Whatever it is, the chorus: “Breathing out/ Hoping to breathe in/ I know nothing’s wrong but I’m not convinced” suits the video perfectly.

Local Natives’ new album Hummingbird arrives January 29 on Frenchkiss.
