After taking dancefloors by storm in 2011 with her breakout debut On a Mission, U.K. electro-pop artist Katy B has been largely quiet this year. Until today. Katy dropped a four-track EP called Danger that is everything bass fans could have hoped for: sultry, booming, eminently danceable, and packed with impressive guests: vocalists Jessie Ware, Wiley, and Iggy Azalea and beat-makers Diplo, Jacques Greene, Zinc, and Geeneus,
These aren’t your David Guetta-variety ass-shaking jams. Katy B is out to recapture the long lost days of jungle and 1990s rave culture, and with her slyly seductive vocals, she’s doing it in a number of different levels. On the album opener “Aaliyah,” Katy stares down her enviable nemesis; gets the party started on electro-tinged “Got Paid,” then gives her man a workout on “Light as a Feather,” and smokes him out on the slow-rolling title track. Blowing your payday and confronting envy aren’t weighty subjects per se, but since it’s often rare to hear a contemporary dance vocalist who transcends navel-gazing to express something deeper, we think she’s saying a lot.
