Sufjan Stevens has a love/hate relationship with Christmas — he relishes subverting its traditions, which becomes his own way of celebrating them. To add to his annual collection of Christmas covers and original music and his always-hilarious holiday portraits, Stevens has created a new tradition: a yearly Christmas singalong. Hive sent Nadia Chaudhury to his Bowery Ballroom show on Saturday night, and she said the scene was just incredible: There were inflatable Santas, confetti, audience members dressed in Santa hats and ornaments. The audience was an important part of the show itself — a man with a clipboard took down audience suggestions for a game of Madlibs, and each fan was given a booklet of lyrics so they could sing with Stevens. “For the closer of the main set, Sufjan donned a costume creation made out of balloons, foil and feathers and called himself the Christmas Unicorn,” she adds. It was just another Christmas miracle.
