Companion is a new-ish indie-pop band hailing from Brooklyn, fronted by 29-year-old Brooklyn-based singer Pepi Ginsberg. And judging by the band’s first single, the project is a great platform for working out her romantic frustrations. ”Only,” gets at a feeling we all know too well, “ending up with someone who is only a stand-in,” explains Ginsberg. “It was written in one of those fortuitous, quick and hazy songwriting mornings, after a very late night and spending time with some friends, old and new — one of whom was a love interest at the time,” she recalls. “In retrospect it feels like the ‘you’ in the song, the love interest, may have deep down been ‘only’ so great anyway, but hindsight is always 20/20.”
