It’s been six years since we’ve heard anything new from Seattle’s sprawl-rock masters Kinski, but they’re back with a new label (Kill Rock Stars) and a more structured sound, as you can hear on the first single, “Conflict Free Diamonds.” But don’t think they’ve abandoned their love of a good riff. “[The song] is a great balance of a more traditional song structure with our need for noise,” says bassist Lucy Atkinson. “I love playing heavy, riff-driven, noisy walls of sound and sometimes I push back against songs that don’t have that. I realize, of course, we need variety in our music.”
“Conflict Free Diamonds” isn’t necessarily political or romantic, but instead is about starting over from scratch, which guitarist Chris Martin equates to “having the rug pulled out from under you.” We can relate to this sentiment, but we’re also content to just zero in on the shredding.
Kinski’s new album, Cosy Moments, arrives April 2 on Kill Rock Stars. Stream “Conflict Free Diamonds” below:
